Vanguard LA

One of the Vampire Societies is that of the Vanguards… so it is with some bemusement that Zetty is sent to the Vanguard Club to work, alongside fellow vamp, Arkady. It is Ashley’s first job and one that she grows to love. It’s the launching pad for some of the adventures and events that almost overwhelm her.

So, I thought I would show you what the Vanguard Club looks like. Yep, it is a real club, right in the heart of LA…

It is a pretty big club, much larger than what it looks like from outside. Plus, it is a favourite of the stars – performers and patrons alike – who want to be seen out and about, with the beautiful people. Hollywood at its best! If or when you visit the City of Angels, this a club you have got to experience.

“Rhesus A” Withdrawn Temporarily

Just letting people know that Rhesus A has been pulled from sale. This means that there should be no new hardcopy or e-book versions on sale. Having said this, I am sure that some local shops and niche suppliers may still have copies available. Likewise with second-hand copies.

Books 1 and 2 of the Ashley Zetterburg series (Rhesus A and Vanguard Coven) will be edited and released at some stage in the future. A major prompt in this decision was the following review on Amazon:

New!                  JugsMacguyver reviewed Rhesus A

So close…                 6 July 2012
The actual storyline is great. Well paced, engaging characters, not your average vampire book. Sadly, this was hard to find through the infuriating spelling errors, grammatical errors and words that were completely omitted. It really doesn’t appear that the book was proof read at all. It’s also a bit strange that the British main character swings between calling her mother mum and mom sentence by sentence. Disappointing…
It is an enticing review, honest and informative. And I agree with it totally. So, off to the editor it is. Maybe that teaches me for not getting the manuscript edited in the first place!

50/50 – Is It M1 Here I Come?

Two months have passed, the fruit trees have grown leaves, the weather has switched to summer (well, my summer – it’s still spring here), mum has been at home for two weeks without visiting hospital (whew!), my cash flow is about to stop, and my writing has stopped.

So that means I face certain choices, namely, do I stay in Adelaide, or do I return to the UK? Sounds simple, and it is, unless one begins to examine all the factors involved. I won’t go into them here (I do talk about them elsewhere… if you know where to look, under my real name), but these things tend to have a complicating influence upon the decision-making process.

Yeah, I could go the airport right now and book the next flight home. That would be a huge surprise to those with whom I have grown to know and care about, plus my mum would be suddenly left here too. Without warning. To resolve this problem I have given myself until the end of November to establish a sustainable income here in South Australia. And I won’t lie: finding a job here is proving oddly fraught with difficulty. If a job offer comes-up before the end of November I’ll take it and stay here; if there is no offer, then I book the next plane outta here.

On the issue of writing, Lilith will be published as a short novel. Hopefully, the brilliant editor I have chosen will stay with me and help me see it through (fingers crossed). Vanguard Coven is coming along nice. The story-line is developing. Unlike Rhesus A, VC is being meticulously planned! I know that when things do go to the editor Rhesus A will be going too. So my man may be snowed-under. Part of the aim of returning to Manchester in the UK (actually, Liverpool is more or less my home) is to get back to some solid writing, the sort where I can hammer-out a chapter in an afternoon. Here with mum in South Australia that is literally impossible – the environment is waaay to restimulative for me.

All this means that the next time you hear from me I may be reporting from Manchester… woohoo.

Getting Sorted

Posted in Lilith, Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Uncategorized, Update, Vanguard - Coven with tags , , , , , , , , , on September 28, 2012 by Kaden Brown

Just like The Beatles’ “Getting Better” (all the time) things here in hot-one-minute-cold-the-next-Adelaide are getting sorted. Though if one looked briefly, giving a cursory glance in the general direction of my life you may not think it, that yes, things are on track to at-least getting better.

This doesn’t mean everything here is fine. The opposite is true. My mum is back in hospital (I think this is her fourth time in less than a month) and hopefully, this time she will not be kicked-back home too quickly – even though mum and I would dearly love her to be able to live at home safely. At-least in hospital she is away from the safety hazards and hassles associated with living independently in a suburban house. For me, just living in a house all by myself is so alien that I have no idea how I would cope in the long term.

On other issues, I need to get on a financially stable footing before proceeding with the editing of Lilith (and at some stage, Rhesus A too), decide if Lilith has been completed (I’m 99% sure that the manuscript is complete), and continue with the planning of the third book, Vanguard Coven, which may also be called something else entirely along the same theme as Rhesus A. The storyline for VC is coming along nice and continues on from where Rhesus A ends. It really does just get better.

My days are occupied by study, going to the hospital, job interviews and drinking coffee. Hmm, I think I have sampled half the cafes in Adelaide and may have settled upon one which does an okay flat white and edible food… their real test will be if they can make a decent Americano. Now if only their cafe tables were just slightly larger so that my laptop would fit…

My Opinion? I’m Just Trying to Walk

A friend and great up-and-coming best-selling author, John Ling (he has a thriller out right now called The Blasphemer, available at Amazon), once asked me to write a piece about my experiences self-publishing. At the time I was a little daunted, and not a little bit perplexed: I had no successful experience as a self-published author. Sure, I had put something on Kindle (an early error-ridden and first draft version of Vanguard Newborn) but my efforts had been dilittante-ish at best.

Since that belittling realisation, which both embarrassed me and motivated me to clean-up VN and make it a darker, more interesting story, things have progressed in leaps and bounds. Vanguard Newborn was finally ready for publishing (without going to an editor!) at which time I decided that the title was not ideal and promptly renamed the book Rhesus A. Actually, the full title is Rhesus A – a Vanguard Newborn.

Digit with a mission

So here I am back in Christchurch, happy to get back to work and struggle on with Lilith, wishing I could be racing onwards with Vanguard Coven (now part of the Rhesus A series…), hoping to get some muscle work at the store, get fitter, and yep, you guessed it, I come down with the mighty flu’.

Not only that, which has put a real dent in my mental stability and self determination, but along comes the need for flipping surgery on my toe. It’s a toe that’s done everything to get at me over the years: anything to bring me down. Crushed by a boat; almost cut off by a misplaced shovel; devastated by a fungal infection; toe nail removal; fracture and re-fracture caused by fall in wet weather (I. Was. Not. Drunk!) and an earthquake (yep boss, it happens to me too you know); and now the god-damn need to have the toe nail partially but permanantly removed due to a whopper of an ingrown nail. The doctors says he’s gonna photograph it – I’ll have to see if he’ll give me the pic.

Prequel to Vanguard: where it began (or what went before)

Posted in Lilith, Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Update, Vanguard - Coven with tags , , , , , on August 9, 2011 by Kaden Brown

Before Vanguard – Newborn, Zetty was of-course Dee Dee. And she had her own life – a human life, full of sex, drugs and spiralling dysfunction.

Some people when they read VN (if the book is ever published) will ask themselves “how exactly did this girl become a vampire?” What is the relationship between Dee Dee and Elizabeth? What about her family? The story was told well before VN was ever written, and though it can now be seen as a prequel to the first Vanguard book it is a totally different genre. Whilst VN is urban fiction (or “paranormal fiction” as some call the genre) “Dee Dee” is more of a drama. Yes, there are murders and frightening events, but the story is about Dee Dee and the collapse of her happy life into the depths of despair, betrayal, sex and drugs.

VN picks-up at literally the very second that “Dee Dee” the prequel ends.

Shortly, the screenplay that tells Dee Dee’s story (simply called “Dee Dee”) will be published on the Simply Scripts website. When it’s up there I will put a direct link in the menu here so readers can directly access it.

Incidently FYI, Dee Dee the screenplay is set in Wellington New Zealand (VN is set in the UK), includes many of the same characters that appear in the VN world – even though Dee Dee/Zetty doesn’t yet realize it. Even by the end of VN Zetty does not know that one specific character (who appears as a semi-key character in the prequel) is actually Si-Kee. In book two of the Books of the Black Society Zetty does learn that someone she knew as a human is Si-Kee. But that will all evolve as Vanguard Coven gets written – which is a while off.

On the Lilith front, I am about to restart writing as soon as the big re-write for VN has been completed. Due to certain obligations writing has been held-up, but things should get back into a good rhythm very soon. Fingers crossed!
