Feedback and Rewrites

Posted in Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Update with tags , , on April 30, 2011 by Kaden Brown

So gradually the opinion over VN is coming in and it sadly confirms my own opinion: that the first three chapters are Crap.

This means that those pages will be dumped and rewritten. In re-reading VN this week I concurred with the criticism. Frankly the style was appalling and most definately sub-standard. As any author knows, rewrites are routine matters that we must take in our stride.

This got me thinking about the how’s and why’s of the matter. In beginning the write the book I made the decision to just write and not get too bogged down in fine details and thinking too much over the style or grammar at that stage. Getting the book underway and overcoming the first hurdle (i.e. taking the first step) was more important than technical issues. The end result was crap ‘choppy’ writing.

Re-doing the beginning of VN isn’t a big deal. I’m pretty confident that with an improved beginning the readibility and enjoyment quotient of the story will improve. And that is the aim afterall. So as soon as the MS comes back it is back to a new beginning. I will post the abandoned chapters at some stage later… maybe, probably…

On a different note, progress is underway in the writing of Lilith. Things are a bit slow at the moment having completed only 5K words but I am laying the structure out for the book and later books in the series.

Ah, the last few days have been consumed by plotting the story for Lilith the lead character in my next book, an adult urban fantasy. Whilst I was playing with the title “Iron Bound” I am more disposed toward a different choice. I will decide probably in the next few weeks. So, though I am progressing at the moment with the book under the title “Lilith” it will almost certainly be changed due to an (unrelated) horror film due to be released shortly that uses the same title.

A few pointers about “Lilith” so-far:

    > Lilith is a very dark and seriously f***ked-up person;
    > She is a “Dark Immortal” with heaps of scars and tattoos (my characters love tats!);
    > Plot is set in urban US cities (the first chapter is set in Detroit);
    > Readers will empathize with Lilith and understand why she does what she does
    > Her character will evolve and she will become torn between…;
    > Other immortals want her dead;
    > Some of the story is set in Samara (Mesopotamia) circa 585 BC;
    > Lilith is addicted to illegal narcotic substance/s.

A pic of a model who I imagine Lilith may look like…

Can you imagine her with blood dripping down her chin? Yeah… or the needle hanging from her arm?

I think that will be suffice for now. Much more info will give away the plot and how the story unfolds.

Oh yes, before I go. Thank you James for the help you gave me. A mention will be made…

Getting it out

Posted in Iron Bound, Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Update with tags , , , on April 17, 2011 by Kaden Brown

Back from Australia where I saw my mum and my sister. Last year I visited my mum, but Karin I hadn’t seen since 1983 (!) So it was nice to see her and my niece…

Now I’m back in Christchurch where we are still having scary earthquakes (one on Saturday evening) and rainstorms that wake one up at four in the morning. My appetite for Australia has grown and maybe I’ll have to put in some hours at my regular job so that I could afford to move to Adelaide, Melbourne or Sydney, on a semi-permanant basis. In my life no location ever lasts for more than ten years… but who knows.

The Vanguard – Newborn manuscript is making the rounds of friends and hopefully I get some feedback that helps me do a re-draft/re-write soon. So-far so good, and I’m holding my breath about a few things in the book. I will never be totally happy about anything I ever write… though I suppose that is what keeps me going.

Anyways, I have come-up with a little blurb for VN:

Being made a Ward of the Vampyre Council is the least of Ashley’s problems. Or so she thought. A grouchy mentor with no patience, a face that everyone is terrified of, and not being allowed home were enough to worry about.

Newborn Ashley Zetterburg doesn’t know it, but powerful forces are aligning and she is their unwitting target. Then there’s the plotting and scheming of the Council Overlords who hold her life in their own hands.

Can she survive long enough to solve the puzzle that made her and set her upon the path of loss, pain and betrayal?

On other matters, work on Iron Bound (or whatever I decide to call it…) has started. Currently devising character biographies and the plot. I think this will be a more difficult book to plan but maybe easier to write. We’ll find out in due course, won’t we?

Iron Bound

Whatever he’d wanted me to do I had accomplished, long ago.

Finished? No, I’m just starting really

Seventeen weeks after starting Vanguard Newborn I have finished writing the story. I know that may seem slow when compared with the likes of writing Goddesses such as Richelle Mead, who can write a book in four to six weeks, but what do I care… she is brilliant and has a multitude of fantastic books that I love. I don’t compare myself to her.

Now I am taking a break from writing for a week or so – not that I will be resting back and forgetting to do anything. Last night I got into bed at about 2am having began to sketch out the character and plot for my next story, which will not be Vanguard Coven. I am taking the advice of a well respected agent who advises me not to follow-up my first book with a second part book (i.e. the second book in the same series). Rather to increase my chances of getting published I am writing a totally different book. The theory being (and she should know!) that a publisher may not want my first book for whatever reason (such as the whole series concept) but they may like my second (a different concept and maybe more saleable).

So that is what I’ll do. I am not giving up on VN. It will continue on the process to try and get it published. Line editing and copy editing awaits Zetty.

I will leave you with three words that indicate my next lead character: Witch. Undead. Adult.

Yeah. Bring it on you ****en c**t! The novel will be an Adult Urban fiction and by adult I mean it will be X-rated. I’m not sure that a publisher would touch it, but I can tone it down if they baulk at the cutting style I plan to use.

I am currently working with the title Iron Bound with the lead being taken by a girl with the name of Nadine who must exist in the underbelly of New York. Evil pleasure is the only thing that can rejuvenate her undead body. Only through learning to empathize and understand those she is forced to sleep with, share needles and harm can she build the knowledge and ability to cast spells, gain happiness, and accept what has happened to her.

But remember… all this may change. Afterall, I am still planning the god damn book (as Zetty would say).

Coming together

My first book of the Vanguard series, the Ashley Zetterburg books of the Black Society, is almost completed. The final chapter is where everything (well most of all those pesky questions and mysteries) gets answered.

I have begun to give copies to friends to evaluate and hopefully they are all able to read it to completion. Not that they are getting the last chapter. That would totally destroy the surprise WTF! ending. Hopefully Vanguard – Newborn will be finished by the end of next week. Then I’m off to South Australia for five days relaxation in (I hope) the lovely warm sun of Adelaide and catch-up time with my mum and sister. When I get back Vanguard – Coven gets started.

So here’s hoping that Zetty is loved by all those who cross her vampiric path.
