Read, read, read…

Posted in Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Update with tags , , , , , on March 29, 2011 by Kaden Brown

Part of what makes me tick, makes me who I am is the books that I read. Over the years I must have read hundreds of books – for pleasure and study. Yet, I have few books in my possession that I read before I came to New Zealand.

So, since the beginning of 2009 I have been keeping the books I read. I don’t know how others feel about books but the loss of all those great lost stories rankles with me. Isaac Asimov (Foundation yeah), Stephen J. Donaldson (vertigo anyone?), Tolkein (God damn hobbits), Clive Barker (he really blew me away!) were some of the great writers I grew up with.

Recently I’ve been on an on-going spending splurge of up to $nz30 each week on adult and YA fiction about the darker side of life: vampires, witches, werewolves, demons, incubus, succbus, angels, hunters, Moroi and Strigoi, Lamia, and of course those pesky humans that love, hate, worship, sneak around and get to be lovely meals…

Here’s my top ten list of fiction I have read in the past year:

10. The Downside Ghosts (Stacia Kane)
9. Millennium Trilogy (Stieg Larsson)
8. Night World (L.J. Smith)
7. The Twilight Saga (Stephenie Meyer)
6. The Black Dagger Brotherhood (J.W. Ward)
5. Guild Hunter Novels (Nalini Singh)
4. Angel (L.A. Weatherly)
3. House of Night (P.C. and Kristen Cast)
2. Vampire Academy (Richelle Mead)
1. The Georgina Kincaid Books (Richelle Mead)

Lisbeth Salander

I would super highly recommend these books to read. Every one of them gave me an adventure and experience I loved and remember. Plus, as someone once told me ‘You should write as much as you can. But you should read even more’. Reading both entertains me and takes me to those fantastic places I can’t even imagine. Strengthening my own imagination and leading my thoughts to places, crazy places – some like those I read about!

So, the moral is: Keep reading

Coffeeshops and pancakes

Posted in Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Update with tags , , , on March 21, 2011 by Kaden Brown

Just a quick update, before I go to bed. I’m writing a scene set in Amsterdam where Zetty is out eating pancakes with a friend. I won’t go into what happens or why (that would give the plot away!).

So I thought I would let you in on where she has her evening meal. It’s at a place called Pancakes Amsterdam. I chose that location, rather than my other choice which was Coffeeshop Johnnys. That sort of place didn’t quite fit with the scene I had to develop, so I opted for a more orthodox type of eatery.

This is the Google streetview of Pancake. I can just imagine Zetty sat there…

Ten Things Zetty Likes

Posted in Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Update with tags , , , , on March 18, 2011 by Kaden Brown

Hmm, Zetty sometimes lives a pretty lively and hectic life. Apart from her petty hates (such as stuck-up bigots) she has a number of, ahem, adult loves. Here’s a quick list of her top ten:

10. Guys and girls (Jessica, Mig)
9. Vampiric walking
8. Combat gear
7. Vodka
6. Cigarettes
5. Sex
4. Chunky black boots
3. Dancing
2. Red Cossacks (blood with a shot of vodka in a highball glass)
1. Lustre A Positive (blood, heated to 37 degrees C)

High up there somewhere is coffee and the cafe lifestyle also. She would probably rate it either 11 or 10 – as her sexuality is a ‘given’.

Waking Up To Forensic Technicians and Police

Posted in Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Update on March 5, 2011 by Kaden Brown

A quick update on Zetty. I’m nearing the final chapters of VN whereby everything comes together. Wow! I love where she’s taking me.

Then this morning, I open my curtains and see a police SUV and official looking cars outside. what on earth is going on? Sadly, the police and forensic technicians have arrived and are going through the rooms of my lost friends, looking for DNA and fingerprint evidence to ID them.

This brings everything back real hard.

Like Zetty I’ll battle on and make the most of what I’ve been given, precious life and time.

Getting There

Posted in Rhesus A - a Vanguard Newborn, Update on March 4, 2011 by Kaden Brown

Yeah, things here are going along good. Just completed chapter ten and have about 125 pages remaining of a projected 400 pages.

The book may end up slightly longer though that is what I am aiming at generally.

Have also completed reading the Stieg Larsson Millennium trilogy. Brilliant. I highly recommend the story. I love Lisbeth!
